“Is my baby using me as a soother?”
This is something many mums ask, or have been told and it can leave you wondering what’s normal.

Newborns often feed 8–12 times (most likely more) in 24 hours. Their tummies are tiny, so they need to feed often .. sometimes close together, sometimes with longer breaks.

Try not to watch the clock. Every baby (and every breast) is different. Some babies feed efficiently and finish quickly, others take their time. What’s important is that your baby is feeding effectively and having plenty of wet and dirty nappies, not how many minutes they spend at the breast.

And when they want to stay close and feed again soon after? That’s not using you as a soother..that’s your baby seeking comfort, connection, and reassurance.

Breastfeeding isn’t just about milk. It’s also how babies co-regulate - how they feel safe, calm, and loved.

Sometimes it helps to picture your baby’s tummy size.
On day one, it’s about the size of a cherry, so tiny drops of your colostrum is all they need.
As the days go on, their tummy (and your milk supply) grow together, and those small feeds gradually become bigger, more satisfying ones.

A few things to keep in mind:

~ These are average volumes - some babies take a little more, some a little less.
~ Feed on demand, not by a schedule or set volume. Your baby’s cues such as sucking, swallowing, and appearing content afterwards tell you much more than counting millilitres.
~ Wet and dirty nappies are a great sign that your baby is getting enough.
~ Your baby’s stomach grows quickly in the first few weeks, so intake naturally increases.

It can be tempting to try a feeding schedule. So many books and online resources suggest it’s the “right way” to get your baby into a routine or sleeping better. I see many families trying it because we all just want to do what’s best for our babies.

But breastfeeding doesn’t work by the clock. When feeds are spaced out or delayed, I often see babies becoming fussier at the breast, latching frantically, or pulling off because milk doesn’t flow quickly enough. Over time, supply can dip too. For many families this ends up leading to more top-ups, and sadly, sometimes to early weaning.

Responsive feeding - watching your baby’s cues, not the clock is what really helps milk supply stay strong, keeps babies calm, and makes breastfeeding feel easier in the long run.

Side-Lying Breastfeeding - A Personal Favourite & Game Changer

Side-lying is one of my absolute favourite positions to share with moms. I’ve used it throughout my own breastfeeding journeys, and I still use it while feeding my little boy today.

This position can be a real game changer for many families, and it’s always so well received when I demonstrate it during consultations. The feedback is consistently positive..parents feel more confident, more comfortable, and more connected.

It’s especially helpful for:
~ Night feeds - restful for both you and baby
~ Post-birth recovery - particularly after a C-section
~ Fussy or unsettled babies - you’re not actively holding or repositioning them, which can help them settle more easily
~ Encouraging a deeper latch - often reducing discomfort and improving feeding effectiveness

How to try it:
~ Lie on your side with a pillow behind your back for support
~ Place baby on their side, tummy-to-tummy with you
~ Bring them in close and line their nose with your nipple
~ This encourages them to tilt their head back, leading with the chin and achieving a deeper latch
~ Support baby’s back or bum with your lower arm or hand for gentle stability

This position can bring so much ease into feeding especially during those early weeks. It’s calm, connected, and incredibly practical. The more you practice it the more natural and comfortable it will feel.

I’ve seen many mums feel disheartened or question themselves when they start combination feeding like they’re somehow not “really” breastfeeding anymore. But the truth is .. Combination feeding is STILL breastfeeding.

Your baby is still getting your amazing live-cell breast milk tailored to them. You’re still getting the benefits of breastfeeding. You’re still building that bond. None of that disappears just because there’s a bottle involved.

Are you using the flange that came with your pump? You might be missing out on comfort and milk.

A recent pilot study found that parents who switched to a smaller flange closer to their actual nipple size produced more milk and felt less pain.

In fact:
~ Most participants had nipple base sizes between 10–22 mm
~ Many had better milk flow with flanges smaller than 21 mm
~ 75% (9 out of 12) produced more milk with a smaller, better-fitting flange
~ 58% rated the smaller flange as very comfortable or like nothing at all

Most Importantly, none of the participants rated the smaller flange as painful.

The average milk increase was 15 grams per session, that’s about 15mls more milk.

This study is helping shift the old “just go up one or two sizes” advice.
Because when it comes to flanges, closer to your nipple size is often better.

If your baby is gaining weight, has plenty of wet and dirty nappies, and seems content – it’s often nothing to worry about.

Common causes include:
• Fast letdown – baby gulps and swallows air
• Oversupply – can happen naturally but sometimes worsened by frequent suction pump use
• When there’s a lot of milk, baby might fill up quickly on the milk at the start of the feed – which is higher in lactose and can overwhelm baby’s tummy

You might hear foremilk/hindmilk imbalance but that’s a bit misleading. Milk fat increases gradually throughout a feed.

Try:
• Letting baby finish one side before offering the other
• Laid-back feeding to slow the flow
• Easing off suction pump use if using and oversupply is a concern

It has incredible benefits for both you and your baby:

~ Regulates your baby’s heart rate, temperature, and breathing
~ Boosts oxytocin for both of you
~ Encourages instinctive breastfeeding behaviours
~ Supports milk production
~ Promotes bonding and calm for you and your baby
~ Increases the chances of exclusive breastfeeding

Aim for at least 60 minutes of uninterrupted skin to skin in that golden first hour after birth, and continue daily as your baby grows.

Studies show that babies who experience uninterrupted skin to skin are more likely to breastfeed effectively and for longer.

If you aren’t able to do skin to skin right after birth, that’s ok. Start when you can it’s never too late to begin.

Strip baby down to their nappy, place them directly on your bare chest, and snuggle under a warm blanket.
45 minutes or more a day can have lasting benefits for feeding, bonding, and emotional wellbeing.

Pointing the nipple straight into baby’s mouth often creates a symmetrical latch, which can lead to shallow attachment, nipple pain, and less effective milk transfer.

By starting with nipple to nose and allowing baby to open wide, we encourage an asymmetrical latch where baby takes in more breast tissue from below the nipple. This helps achieve a deeper latch, protects your nipples, and supports better milk removal.

Night feeds can feel never-ending especially when you are exhausted.
But did you know prolactin levels (the milk making hormone) are highest at night between 1-5am. That’s why those middle of the night feeds play such an important role in building and maintaining your milk supply, especially in the early weeks. They also provide comfort and connection for both you and your baby and support baby’s brain development.

It’s so tempting (and sometimes necessary) to have your partner give a bottle overnight and if that’s what works for your family, that’s ok. But if you’re aiming to maintain a full milk supply, keeping at least one overnight breastfeed particularly in that 1–5am window can make a big difference.

I know the exhaustion is real but it doesn’t last forever. You are doing great and better than you think.

A fast let-down is very common and can happen for a number of reasons, including your unique breast anatomy, hormonal changes, an abundant milk supply, or even the early stages of establishing breastfeeding.
The release of the hormone oxytocin triggers milk to flow, and sometimes, it can cause a faster, stronger let-down than your baby can easily manage.

If you’re noticing your baby gulping quickly at the start of a feed, coming on and off the breast, coughing, spluttering, clamping down on your nipple or seeming frustrated, it’s likely they are trying to keep up with a strong milk flow. You might also find your little one is extra gassy or unsettled after feeds, as they may be swallowing air while feeding.

Simple things you can try to help:
~ Hand express a little milk before latching
~ Try a laid-back and side lying breastfeeding position
~ Gently compress your breast with side of your hand to slow flow
~ Pause the feed during fast let-down, then re-latch

Fast let-down often settles with time as your baby grows and adapts and your milk regulates. If you are overwhelmed and unsure, reach out for help.

Hand expression is a simple yet powerful skill to learn during pregnancy and can make a meaningful difference in your breastfeeding journey, especially in the early days after birth.

Learning to hand express (from 37 weeks) not only helps you feel more confident and in control, but it’s also linked with better breastfeeding outcomes and improved milk supply if done in the few days after baby arrives.

The first hour after birth, often called the golden hour is a key time for milk production. Hand expressing colostrum in this window especially if baby can’t feed is linked with better milk production later on.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets hands on support in the hospital due to time and staffing. That’s why learning this technique before baby arrives can help you feel prepared and empowered.

Here’s a quick how to:
~ Wash your hands
~ Warm your breasts with a cloth or gentle massage

Your baby needs their hands. They’ve been bringing them to their mouths since their time in your womb. It helps them feel connected, secure and soothed but it’s also one of the earliest ways they can show you that they’re ready to feed, often before they start to cry (late feeding cue).

Covering their hands too much can make it harder for them to settle or communicate the early feeding cues like rooting or sucking on their fingers. Also, I can’t imagine sucking on a mitten is very comforting.

If your baby is really scratching themselves, of course it’s ok to pop the mittens on now and again. Follow their lead and trust your motherly instincts.

I’ve been there too — wondering if something was wrong because baby wanted to be on the breast again just minutes after finishing.

The truth is cluster feeding is totally normal. It’s your baby’s clever way of increasing your milk supply, getting through a growth spurt, and seeking out that closeness and comfort only you can give.

You might be thinking and questioning:
“Are they getting enough milk?”
“Do I have a low supply?”

Here’s how you can tell it’s normal and your baby is getting what they need:
- You’re seeing plenty of wet and dirty nappies
- They’re gaining weight steadily
- They’re actively feeding, even if they’re a bit fussy

But if you’re noticing things like:
- Fewer than 6 wet nappies in 24 hours after day 5
- Very few or no dirty nappies
- Baby is constantly unsettled — not just during a cluster
- Slow or poor weight gain

…check in with someone who can support you.

I know it’s hard when you’re in the middle of it — the constant feeds, the second-guessing, the tiredness. But please remember this is just a phase. It will pass.
